For Maryknoll Brother Marty Shea, the civil war in Guatemala became not only the focus of his work, but also the focus of his life. Beginning in the 1980s, Shea lived among families in rural Guatemala and went with them as they were chased into Mexican refugee camps by powerful opposition forces. Shea was also there for the return of many families to Guatemala after the bloody civil war ended. Throughout his long journey, Shea kept a journal of photos and writings called "Save the Kids, Save their Stories" that chronicles the hope and faith he witnessed firsthand during these times of immense challenge.

In a recent wide-ranging conversation with Maryknoll Interactive Media, Brother Shea opened up about his life's work among the Guatemalan people.

The Easter Experience in The Field Afar – a Bengali Way of the Cross

Every year thousands of people take part in the pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Baromari, Bangladesh, an event that culminates with an elaborate "Way of the Cross" ceremony. This year, Maryknoll Father William McIntire, M.M., concelebrated the pilgrimage Mass at St. Leo's Parish in the Baromari Mission and Maryknoll Magazine was on hand to record exclusive video of the Bengali "Way of the Cross".
The sheer number of attendees is especially impressive considering the Catholics of Bangladesh are thought to only number 1% of the total population. As Father McIntire says, "the annual pilgrimage to the Shrine has helped to put this place on the Bangladesh Catholic map. I think many people will be surprised to learn that there is such a Catholic shrine in Bangladesh."

With no help." In response, Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers are now establishing a Rehabilitation and Trauma Treatment Center on a 7-hectare site that’s been bought for this purpose.
In this exclusive video segment, Father St. Vil talks about the trip, his own personal connection to Haiti, and what Maryknoll - and you - can do to help.
