Maryknoll Father Joe La Mar found himself in a somewhat unusual place recently - appearing on Comedy Central's THE DAILY SHOW to talk about corporate responsibility.

He made his cable TV debut as part of a 4-person team explaining the work of the Interfaith Council on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR).

The ICCR is a group of over 250 religious organizations whose aim, through the lens of faith, is to build a more just and sustainable world by integrating social values into corporate and investor actions.

The ICCR's combined portfolios amount to an estimated 120 billion dollars and they use that financial leverage with the corporations in which they invest. They lobby for corporate actions that are morally responsible in the way they effect people and the environment. As Father La Mar puts it, "We're not out to destroy the corporations, after all, we're invested in them. We want to guide them in ways that they can be productive, not only for the bottom line, but for the community and for the environment."

Now you might not think "comedy" and "corporate resonsibility" would normally go together, and Father La Mar says the group also had their own initial misgivings; "We were not so happy to get on [the show]- we spent too much time getting to this point where we were getting a tremendous amount of support, and didn't want to make a mockery of it." But the producers were persistent and convinced the ICCR group that they would respect the their work and not put it down with mockery.

Father La Mar recently sat down with Maryknoll Radio's Kathy Golden in the "Voices of Our World" studio to talk about the DAILY SHOW experience, as well as the work of the ICCR and what it has meant to his own life of mission.
