With his long gray beard and monk-like brown robe, million-selling recording artist John Michael Talbot may look the part of a hermit, but he's certainly not hiding from the world. In fact, he was anything but solitary as he sang and spoke for well over an hour to the receptive and engaged crowd gathered for his Maryknoll Speaker Series appearance. Between songs culled from his long music career, Talbot opened up about how he turned away from a life as a successful rock musician in the early 70's to devote his life and his music to Jesus Christ.

Talbot's "Brothers and Sisters of Charity" community in Arkansas has, according to his website, about forty members living at the monastery and some five hundred more domestic members in their own homes worldwide. It was the first community of its kind in North America to be granted canonical status by the Catholic Church and one of only a handful of communities in the world to encompass celibates, single people, married couples and families. Using his most recent book, The World is My Cloister, and his own community as touchstones, Talbot encouraged those gathered to seek their own solace and sacred stillness within themselves, regardless of whether or not they ever set foot in a monastery.

Talbot sat down with Maryknoll Interactive Media before his Speaker Series appearance for an exclusive interview about his life and career that can be viewed by clicking HERE or on this article's photo.
