Vocations
Become a Brother
Maryknoll Brothers' common belief is that our primary identity is found in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Brother

In the early days of Maryknoll, Maryknoll Brothers were skilled tradesmen and were responsible for constructing and maintaining a good number of buildings in the missions. Throughout the years, we have expanded our specializations to include many other areas of mission service including pastoral ministry. Today, we use our talents not only to build missions and schools, but to work as teachers and administrators, develop agricultural and other life-sustaining projects with indigenous people, serve in health-related fields and contribute in numerous ways to the ministry of Maryknoll.
If you are between the ages of 21 and 40, in college, or have a college degree, technical training or its equivalent, and have an aptitude for studies, God may be calling you to serve in this same capacity as a Missionary Brother.
We can help you make the right decision. Find a quiet place, take some time alone, and ask yourself some questions:
- What do I want to do with my life?
- Do I have an understanding of our Catholic Faith?
- Do I participate actively in the Church?
- Do I have a commitment now to those who are less fortunate, and do I participate in some type of volunteer work?
- Do I have an openness to people of other cultures, to people who have other visions of the world and ways of living?
- Could I attain the skills needed to live a celibate life that will make me totally accessible to those in need?
If you think this could be your calling, consider the requirements:
- Integrate your personal and spiritual lives during the first year of Formation
- Participate in 1 - 2 years of specialized study in the Brotherhood Formation YearsTake part in an Overseas Training Program for ordinarily 2 - 3 years gaining practical experience as part of the training.
Then take the time to talk this over with a friend, a family member, your parents, perhaps your parish priest. Feel free to contact us at vocation@maryknoll.org or contact a Maryknoll Mission Center.
