Maryknoll Essay Contest: Vatican Responds to Letters from Youth

The letters written by the six winners of the “2014 Maryknoll Magazine Student Essay Contest” were seen by Pope Francis.

The theme of the “2014 Maryknoll Magazine Student Essay Contest” was for grade and high school students to write letters to Pope Francis that explained how they or other young people are following the pope’s personal message for them — “Have courage. Go forward. Make noise.” Pope Francis speaks frequently to the world’s youth, whom he considers the “architects of the future.”

The contest received more than 8,000 entries, with the winning letters composed by students from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and the Federated States of Micronesia.

The six winning letters were sent to Pope Francis and Maryknoll magazine Managing Editor Marge Gaughan just received a wonderful reply from the Vatican. A copy of the Vatican letter will be presented to each of the six student winners.
